Augustinian Seculars

Yesterday we celebrated the memorial of St. Magdalene of Nagasaki (1611 - 1634).
She was admitted into the Third Order of St. Augustine at the Age of 14. St. Magdalene served as interpreter to the Augustinian Recollects missionaries, and became a catechist herself. Knowing that Catholics were being martyred, she publicly declared her faith to encourage those who were wavering, and was tortured to death. Pope John Paul II beatified her in 1981 and canonized her in 1987.

St. Magdalene belonged to the Tertiary or Secular branch of the Augustinian family. The Augustinian seculars are lay men and women who try to follow Christ and spread his message in their daily lives under the spiritual leadership and teaching of St. Augustine. There are four groups of seculars in our province: In San Diego, in L.A., in the Bay Area, and in Southern Oregon.
